ESOL in the Community Project

We work with communtiy partners to develop ESOL classes that meet the needs of people living in your area. We have developed partnership classes since 2006 with employers such as NHS Scotland, First bus and Big Issue and many more; and with community partners such as Toryglen Community Centre and Chinese Community Partnership.

We offer SQA accredited classes to learner who are ready from pre-literacies until National 4 and fully support people to prepare themselves for the challenge.

Volunteer Tutor Project

The Volunteer Tutor Project works in partnership with community based organisations working with asylum seekers, refugees and migrants to provide quality informal ESOL classes around the city. We currently run 8 volunteer run classes, including women only groups and a class for people accessing a foodbank. Our volunteers also provide one-to-one tuition to learners with specific personal or learning needs. For many learners, our provision is the first step to accessing further education and we ensure that we support learners to progress onto college where suitable. Our learners report an increase in confidence in using the language they have, after attending classes.

Our volunteers are all qualified English teachers (CELTA minimum),and a range of teaching experiences. We welcome non-native English teachers with qualifications and the experience of settling into life in Glasgow. Tutors receive ongoing training and support from the project. The project generally supports 30-35 active tutors but many retain a close interest in the project, often returning to volunteer with us.
